The engineer who taught a robot to walk

For three years, Marta Ruiz filmed every fall. Today her robot crosses a room with nobody touching it.

Marta Ruiz didn’t set out to build a humanoid. She started out frustrated with robot videos that looked like miracles and never reached a store.

“I didn’t want a robot that looked magical in a video. I wanted one that works on an ordinary Tuesday.”

Her team at Acme Robotics made an unusual call: film every test start to finish, no cuts. If the robot fell, the world would watch it fall.

That honesty became a method. Three years on, the AIRA-1 walks autonomously and costs less than a car. The hero was never the machine, it was the person who refused to fake it.
