Two different roboticses under one roof
Healthcare robotics is best understood as two industries sharing a building. The first is the operating room's, veteran and multibillion-dollar: the da Vinci has operated since 2000 and closed 2025 with 11,106 installed systems and surgeries growing 17-19% a year, per its maker's earnings. It is, deliberately, teleoperation: the robot decides nothing, it amplifies the precision of a surgeon who decides everything.
The second belongs to the corridors, young and logistics-minded: autonomous robots running the hospital's errands. Its reference is Moxi, with more than 1.25 million deliveries and 100,000 elevator rides with no human in the loop. Why the hospital is autonomy's hardest exam
A warehouse can be organized around the robot; a hospital cannot. Corridors fill with gurneys, visitors and emergencies, elevators are shared, and an error costs not a pallet but a dose. That is why Moxi's technical milestone isn't walking but operating for years among patients without incident: the same leap from cages to the open world we saw in warehouse robotics, with a far higher safety bar.
And that is why the operating room will stay teleoperated for years, surgeon in command and machine as instrument.
