Twenty-four years between the disc and the butler
Home robotics is told with two machines separated by a quarter century. In 2002, the Roomba reached stores at $199.95 doing one single thing without asking permission or supervision; it took its creators fourteen failed business models to discover that the home's front door was the floor. In 2026, the 1X Neo arrives at $20,000 promising to do everything, with a nuance its own maker declares: for the hard tasks, the one deciding is a remote human operator in a VR headset.
That distance is not an accident but the nature of the terrain. A house is the least standardized environment there is: every living room has different light, different furniture, different children and a different dog. Warehouses can be reorganized around the robot, as we tell in logistics; hospitals impose protocols; your kitchen does not. That is why the only real domestic victories have belonged to single-task robots, and why the general-purpose butler still needs a human inside.
The home rule: ask who decides
The living room is the favorite stage of viral robot videos, and also where the truth gets stretched furthest: filming a kitchen is cheap and solving one is very expensive. Before believing (or buying), apply our standing question: who decides, the machine or a person? A vacuum decides alone; a home humanoid, today, almost never. The difference between declaring it, as 1X does with its expert mode, and hiding it, as in the cases we document in our demos investigation, is the difference between an honest product and a staged one.
