what is teleoperation?
It is legitimate and sometimes desirable technology: remote surgery, bomb disposal and underwater inspection use it precisely because nobody wants the machine deciding alone. The problem starts when it is charged for or marketed as autonomy, a pattern we document in the famous demos that weren’t what they seemed.
Technically, a teleoperation chain has three pieces: the robot's sensors (cameras, microphones, force sensors) carrying the scene to the operator, the communications link, and the controls through which the person sends decisions back. The chain's quality is measured in latency: in surgery or fine manipulation, a few tenths of a second separate useful from unusable. The most advanced systems add haptic feedback, like the hands of Stanford's OceanOneK, which let the pilot's fingers feel what the robot touches hundreds of meters underwater.
Honest teleoperation is everywhere and apologizes for nothing: the da Vinci operates with a surgeon's hands deciding every gesture, underwater ROVs carry a pilot because radio doesn't work underwater, and bomb-disposal robots exist precisely so the person can be far away. The problem is not the technique: it is presenting it as autonomy. The humanoid demos that went viral in 2024, with the Tesla Optimus serving drinks at the front, were teleoperation without the label.
One recent turn is worth knowing: teleoperation has become autonomy's school. Humanoid makers employ human operators to pilot their robots for thousands of hours, and those recordings train the VLA models that try to learn the trade. A new job has been born (robot operator, with public postings on the companies' own career pages) and an uncomfortable question this house watches: when does the robot stop needing its teacher? Meanwhile, the honest answer to "is it autonomous?" is usually: at times, and with someone watching.
