Atlas

The world's most famous humanoid trades parkour for welding: Hyundai wants it in its factories by 2028.

Why this verdict · Updated July 2026

The electric Atlas videos show real tasks Boston Dynamics declares autonomous, with no signs of teleoperation in the technical demos. What does not yet exist is the deployment: the verdict covers what is shown, not what is promised for 2028.

What it does well

  • Four decades of dynamic-balance research behind it, from Marc Raibert's lab to today
  • Electric version with joints that rotate beyond human range
  • A single owner with real factories to prove it in, not just stages
  • Commercial siblings already selling and billing: Spot and Stretch

What it doesn’t

  • Not for sale, with no price or pricing date
  • Has never worked a full shift in public
  • The 30,000 units a year are a Hyundai plan, not an existing factory
  • No independent audit of its demos' autonomy

Frequently asked

Can you buy Boston Dynamics' Atlas?

No. Atlas is not for sale and never has been: it is a development platform whose first planned deployment is internal, at Hyundai's Georgia factory from 2028. The Boston Dynamics robots you can buy are the Spot quadruped and the Stretch logistics arm.

Is Atlas autonomous or teleoperated?

Boston Dynamics states that the electric Atlas demos (such as sorting engine parts) are autonomous, and the technical footage shows no signs of teleoperation. There is not yet an independent audit or commercial deployment confirming it over a real workday: which is why our REAL verdict covers what is shown, not what is promised.

How much does the Atlas robot cost?

It has no public price because it is not sold. As a house reference, the Spot quadruped went on sale in 2020 at $74,500 in its base configuration. If Atlas is ever commercialized after its internal Hyundai deployment, it will be after 2028.
