Why does a single AI presence score matter?
A single score matters because it distils the data from monthly AI visibility tests across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews into one number that can be tracked over time and reported to ownership.
The score does not replace the detailed query log. It sits on top of it, giving you a headline number that answers the question: “Are we getting better?”
How is the AI presence score calculated?
The AI presence score is calculated from three components, each weighted equally.
Component 1: Appearance rate (33%)
What it measures: What percentage of your test queries return your property name in the AI response?
How to calculate: Count the number of queries that named your property, divide by the total number of queries run across all tools.
Example: You run 10 queries in ChatGPT and 10 in Perplexity (20 total). Your property is named in 7 of the ChatGPT queries and 3 of the Perplexity queries (10 total). Appearance rate = 10/20 = 50%.
Component 2: Accuracy rate (33%)
What it measures: When AI tools name your property, how accurately do they describe it?
How to calculate: For each instance where you were named, score the description on three criteria:
- Correct property type (hotel, boutique hotel, resort, etc.) = 1 point
- Correct distinguishing feature mentioned = 1 point
- No factual errors about the property = 1 point
Total points / (3 x number of named instances) = accuracy rate.
Example: Named 10 times. Average score of 2.4/3 per naming = 80% accuracy rate.
Component 3: Coverage breadth (33%)
What it measures: How many distinct AI tools name you?
How to calculate: Score out of 3 based on which tools name you: ChatGPT (1 point), Perplexity (1 point), Google AI Overviews (1 point).
Coverage breadth = (number of tools that named you / 3) x 100%.
Composite score
AI presence score = (appearance rate + accuracy rate + coverage breadth) / 3
Example calculation
A hotel runs monthly tracking and finds:
- Appearance rate: 50% (named in half of tested queries)
- Accuracy rate: 80% (mostly correct descriptions)
- Coverage breadth: 67% (named in ChatGPT and Perplexity, not Google AI Overviews)
AI presence score = (50 + 80 + 67) / 3 = 66
What does a good AI presence score look like for an independent hotel?
Scores break into five bands, from 0-20 (not visible) up to 81-100 (dominant presence across every major tool), and a starting property should target 40+ within six months.
| Score | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| 0-20 | Not visible in AI search. Foundational issues with schema, NAP consistency, or editorial presence. |
| 21-40 | Emerging presence. Named in some tools for some queries, but inconsistently. |
| 41-60 | Developing presence. Named reliably in at least one tool, descriptions mostly accurate. |
| 61-80 | Strong presence. Named across multiple tools, descriptions accurate, some query types still missing. |
| 81-100 | Dominant presence. Named consistently across all major tools for all relevant query types. |
For an independent hotel starting from zero, reaching a score of 40+ within 6 months of implementing the core fixes (schema, NAP consistency, llms.txt) is realistic. A score of 60+ typically requires meaningful editorial coverage as well.
How do I report the AI presence score to ownership?
Report it as a simple monthly format, this month’s score, the trend, what changed, and the next priority, the same metric a revenue manager or general manager can put in front of ownership without explaining AI crawler mechanics.
- This month’s score: 52 (up from 41 last month)
- Trend: +11 points in 30 days
- What changed: Schema errors fixed; now named in Perplexity for “boutique hotels [city]” queries
- Next priority: Build Google AI Overviews presence by increasing external editorial mentions
