What Google AI Overview is
Google AI Overview is the AI-generated summary that appears at the top of some Google search results pages. When a user searches “boutique hotels in Seville” or “best hotel near Sagrada Familia”, they may see an AI-generated summary with a short list of recommended properties, above the standard organic results and hotel pack.
This summary is generated by Google’s Gemini model and is distinct from the traditional hotel pack (the map-based listing). A property can appear in AI Overview without appearing prominently in organic results, and vice versa.
What data Google AI Overview pulls from
Google AI Overview has a significant advantage over other AI search engines: it has direct access to Google’s own data. This includes:
Google Business Profile. A complete, verified GBP is the single strongest signal for appearing in Google AI Overview hotel recommendations. Google uses GBP data to verify entity identity, location, category and key attributes.
Google Reviews. Volume, rating, recency and attribute specificity of Google reviews are direct inputs. Properties with high review volumes and specific guest mentions of distinctive features are better represented in AI Overview responses.
Google Maps. Location data, photo impressions, Q&A sections and the accuracy of business information on Maps all feed into Google’s entity profile for your property.
Indexed website content. Schema.org markup on your website, the content of your About and FAQ pages, and the structure of your rooms and amenities pages all contribute to what Google’s AI knows about your property.
Web content from other sources. TripAdvisor, Booking.com, travel editorial coverage and local press all contribute corroborating signals.
The Google Business Profile priority
For Google AI Overview specifically, a complete and verified Google Business Profile is more important than for any other AI search system. This is because Google trusts its own data sources most. A hotel with an unclaimed or incomplete GBP is starting from a significant disadvantage.
Complete GBP means: verified ownership, accurate category (choose the most specific applicable category, not just “Hotel”), full address and phone number, website URL, opening hours if applicable, all relevant attributes filled in (parking, pool, breakfast, pet policy, etc.), at least 20 photos, and an active response pattern on reviews.
The hotel pack vs. AI Overview
Appearing in Google’s hotel pack (the map-based booking integration) is a different process from appearing in AI Overview. Hotel pack placement is driven by availability data, pricing and booking integration. AI Overview placement is driven by entity quality, reviews and structured data.
A hotel can perform well in one and not the other. The properties that perform well in both tend to have complete GBPs, strong review profiles, schema markup on their websites, and consistent data across booking platforms.
How long does it take to appear
Changes to a Google Business Profile are reflected in Google’s systems within days to a couple of weeks. Schema.org markup changes on a website are typically indexed within a few weeks of the next crawl. Changes in review profile take longer, as they depend on an accumulating pattern of new reviews.
Most properties that implement a complete GBP update, add schema markup to their website and respond actively to reviews see a measurable improvement in AI Overview visibility within 6-10 weeks.
