What is NAP consistency?
NAP consistency is the principle that your hotel’s Name, Address and Phone number (NAP) should be identical in format and content across every platform, directory, and listing where it appears.
The concept originates in local SEO but is directly applicable to AI search: AI systems build entity profiles by aggregating information across sources. If the same property appears under different names or at slightly different addresses across platforms, the AI may not recognise these as the same entity.
What does NAP inconsistency look like?
It looks like the same hotel appearing under four subtly different names and addresses, one per platform, none of which match exactly. A typical example for an independent hotel:
| Platform | Name | Address |
|---|---|---|
| Your website | Maison du Parc Hotel | 14 Avenue du Parc, Lyon |
| Google Business Profile | Maison du Parc | 14, Avenue du Parc, 69006 Lyon |
| Booking.com | Hotel Maison du Parc | Avenue du Parc 14, Lyon, France |
| TripAdvisor | Maison Parc Lyon | 14 Av. du Parc, 6th Arrondissement |
To a human, these all clearly refer to the same hotel. To an AI system building an entity graph, these are four different entries that partially overlap. The signal that should be accumulating toward one entity is instead scattered across four.
Which fields do I need to standardise?
Standardise three fields directly, name, street address and phone number, plus a few adjacent ones worth checking.
Name. Pick one form and use it everywhere, including punctuation and accents. “Maison du Parc” everywhere, not “Maison Du Parc” on one platform and “Maison du parc” on another.
Street address. Use the same format: abbreviate or spell out consistently (“Avenue” or “Ave.” but not both), use the same number format, include or exclude the suite/floor consistently.
Phone number. Use full international format (e.g. +33 4 78 XX XX XX) everywhere, not national format on some platforms and international on others.
Also check: Email address, website URL (with or without www, with or without trailing slash), and booking URL. These are not part of NAP strictly, but inconsistencies here contribute to entity fragmentation.
How do I audit my NAP consistency?
Search for your property name in quotes on Google. Click through every listing that appears: TripAdvisor, Google Maps, Booking.com, Expedia, Yelp, local directories. Make a note of every variation in name and address format.
Then standardise. Most platforms allow you to edit your own listing. For aggregator directories you do not control, the process varies but usually involves claiming the listing and submitting a correction.
How long does NAP consistency take to propagate?
Updating your own listings (Google Business Profile, TripAdvisor, Booking.com) takes days to a week. Propagation through AI systems takes 4-8 weeks as the new consistent signals replace the old fragmented ones.
